Wagasa are made of oiled paper stretched over a bamboo frame, with lacquered ribs positioned on the outside of the paper. About 50 hand-cut ribs of select bamboo are tied together with an intricate bamboo or cotton string mesh. Construction is made by different people with extraordinary skills and each wagasa requires up to 100 construction steps. The man's wagasa is somewhat larger and more plain than those used by women. |
