Gyoshobako, a Japanese peddler chest, is a lightweight chest of drawers able to be carried on the back so that the peddler could travel from town to town selling the wares contained within whether it be medicine, herbs, candles, textiles, dried fish, tinware, or some other sellable items or skills.

This tansu is made of sugi and kiri wood, finished with shunkei lacquer. All the hardware is iron, either sheet or cast, fixed in place with iron rivets. It contains seven interior drawers, warabite handles, and simple (single-action) locks. Back of the chest shows rope tiedown rings for carrying straps and a frame for a pillow to ease the load on the peddler's back. This item is modeled from photos of a real specimen from the late Edo-Meiji era. Its dimensions are 35" H x 12.75" W x 17" D [88.9 x 32.385 x 43.18 cm].
